“Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hands into his side, I will not believe.” John 20:25
These are the scoffing words of the disciple Thomas when he heard the news from the other disciples that Jesus was alive after His crucifixion. On the same day that Jesus was raised from the dead, He not only appeared to Mary Magdalene outside the garden tomb (John 20:14-17) but to two disciples as they walked from Jerusalem to the city Emmaus (Luke 24:13-31. When the three men sat down to eat together, Jesus blessed the food. After hearing the way He blessed the food, the two disciples instantly recognized it was the Lord—and just as suddenly...he vanished out of their sight.” (vs. 31)
That same evening, Jesus supernaturally traveled through the walls of a house where the eleven disciples were gathered, and miraculously appeared right in front of them. (John 20:19) The disciples at first were terrified and thought they had seen a spirit, but Jesus told them “Behold, my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: touch me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me have.” (vs 38, 39) Then Jesus asked them for something to eat and the disciples gave Him a piece of fish and an honeycomb which He ate before them. Jesus then began to point out from scriptures key Old Testament prophecies having to do with Himself . (Luke 24:42-48) He then opened their understanding of the scriptures and explained to His disciples that they should preach repentance in His Name among the nations and be a witness to the things they had seen.
EYES OPENED! Later when the disciples were behind closed doors, Thomas was with them. Jesus came and suddenly appeared before them again. He said to Thomas “….reach your hand and thrust it into my side...and believe.” Now Thomas believed. (John 20:26, 27) There are many infallible proofs of Jesus resurrection mentioned by Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:5-7. Many who ate with him, talked to him, fellowshipped with him. He even helped the disciples to catch fish!
The Day of the Lord is Coming. The scriptures that foretold of Christ’s first coming into the world also forecast the coming of Christ the second time to judge the world and rule the earth. Apostle Peter writes that “scoffers will mock this truth and say, ‘What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again?”’ Do you believe that He is coming again? Have your eyes been open to the scriptures to the reality that Jesus is near to you right now as you go about the activities of your daily life? When it all becomes real to your understanding, you too will worship like Thomas who declared, “My Lord and my God!”
