The Purpose of the Law

As we go through the series on Understanding Grace, it is important that we remember the purpose of the law (truth). Grace and truth go together, as Jesus said “Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill!” Matthew 5:17

Four Purposes of the Law

1. The law is a master: “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.” Galatians 3:24, 25

2. The law is a mirror: “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:23-25) “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ‘You shall not covet.’” Romans 7:7

3. The law is a map: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalms 119:105 We are all inexperienced in too much of life to be without a guide. The law gives direction, wisdom, instruction, correction, and teaching.

4. The law is a measure: The law shows us how we are doing. There is a popular term today called subjective morality, particularly in the universities. One Christian instructor was asked why he didn’t believe in subjective morality. He responded by asking the student, “Do you lock your doors at night?” The student answered “Yes I do.”  “Well then you believe in objective morality and you should!”

God’s truth is for the good of His children. The reason He is against lying is because it hurts people. The reason He is against abortion is because it hurts people. The reason He is against stealing is that it hurts people. Just as He spoke and the earth was created and is sustained, so He has spoken regarding His laws for living.
